in this particular novel readers will notice the many obstacles Michael Oher has overcome. as a a child of an imprisoned father and a drug- addicted mother, michael oher has never experienced the love of a real family. he began his journey as a broken child, shy and withdrawn, however he made it to where he is today. Oher has shown that this is due to to his resilience. his capacity to overcome obstacles in his life. this compares to the resilience zamperini showed in unbroken. however while louie found resilience through forgiveness, michael found resilience through forgetting. for example, hillenbrand states, "at that moment, something shifted sweetly inside him. it was forgiveness, beautiful and effortless and complete. for louie zamperini, the war was over" to louie forgiveness was the only way he knew how to move and let go. similarly, michael oher found resilience through forgetting. lewis states, "Michael's gift is that the good lord gave him the ability to forget. he's mad at no one and doesn't really care what happened. his story might be sad, but he's not sad" (Lewis 89). no matter what his circumstances oher did not dwell in the past and did not allow himself to stay mad at how life has treated him. |
